Top Ten Things to do in Puerto Rico

November 16, 2017

Puerto Rico is a place of endless entertainment and enjoyment. There are so many fun activities to do while in Puerto Rico no matter what you're in the mood for. Here are some of the top ten things to do while you're visiting.

1) Drink Pina Coladas

The pina colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico. This delicious cocktail was first created on the island back in the 1950s and remains Puerto Rico's most important contribution to the cocktail world. Refreshing, with the right amount of sweetness, you have to try it at least once while you're visiting.

2) Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico. Technically it is on the nearby island of Culebra, a quick boat ride away. The waters are crystal clear and perfectly blue, framed by a stunning white sand beach. It's the ideal spot for a little swimming, catching some rays, or simply relaxing and listening to the sound of the waves.

3) El Yunque National Forest

The only rainforest in the USA, El Yunque is phenomenally beautiful. Lush foliage is crisscrossed by a series of rivers, waterfalls, and amazing rock formations. El Yunque is fantastic for a day hike and also offers a point of interest for history buffs – it contains petroglyphs left by the indigenous Taino people.

4) Snorkeling

The stunningly blue waters surrounding Puerto Rico is the place to do a little snorkeling. Swim with sea turtles and observe the underwater flora and fauna around the island. If you want to do your fair share of snorkeling while on holiday, you can also test the waters around one of Puerto Rico's many offshore islands.

5) Museum Hopping

Whether you're an art lover, an amateur historian, or simply appreciate historic architecture, Puerto Rico is home to a wonderful selection of museums. Some of our favorites are Museo de Arte de Ponce, Museo de las Americas, and the Museum of History.

6) Eat Street Food

Puerto Rican cuisine is some of the tastiest around. With its incredible diversity of cultural influences, Puerto Rican food has flavor to spare. For the most authentic experience, head over to a street vendor and order some alcapurria, pionono, or relleno de papas.

7) Visit Old San Juan

The oldest part of Puerto Rico, Old San Juan is where you'll find many of the island's most historic buildings. Beyond the gorgeous buildings, there's plenty of great cafes, hotels (including the Caribe Hilton Hotel where the original pina colada may have been made), and more.

8) Visit Arecibo Observatory

This is where the world's largest radio telescope is found and is a great place to stop by and visit if there are any science lovers in your party, particularly if you have older children interested in science and outer space. The Observatory is also famous for being featured in many films including. Goldeneye and Contact.

9) Bioluminescent Bay

One of the rarest yet most exhilarating natural sites in the world, Mosquito Bay on the offshore island Vieques is the brightest bioluminescent bay the world. Lit up by microscopic organisms, a trip to this bio bay is a magical one.

10) Take a Salsa Class

Get your groove on with a salsa class at one of San Juan's many dance schools, then hit the dance floors at night. It's a fun way to spend an afternoon while learning a skill you can carry with you the rest of your life!

Once you arrive in this island paradise, you may not want to leave! But when you board the plane
